You may have discovered that it is not so black and white when choosing what type of pavement you would like for your next driveway, as there are so many paving methods available these days.  Options are always nice to have, but sometimes they can pose themselves as a problem if you do not understand the difference between them.  When deciding what type of pavement you would like for your driveway project, it is important that you understand the difference between a chip sealed driveway vs. hot mix asphalt.

We gladly provide many options for our clients and will perform whatever services fit your paving preferences.  At Tar and Chip Texas, we will help guide you through any questions you may have about the differences for paving methods to help you pick which type best suits your driveway tarring needs.
Chip Seal Driveway

Chip Seal is also known as tar & chip.  Chip seal driveways have become very popular recently due to their beautiful appearance and design.  The chip and seal method has been around for hundreds of years and is a very economical and affordable option compared to hot mix asphalt.  During the paving process, first the liquid tar is applied to the grated asphalt base, and then a layer or two of different types of gravel are spread on top of the hot mix asphalt.  Once the gravel is applied, it is then compacted down.  Many people love the chip and seal method because of the ability to choose the types of gravel stones used in the process also allows them to choose the color of their driveway.
Pavement Roller Tar and Chip Installation
Advantages of a chip and seal driveways are outstanding.  A chip seal driveway is a very affordable option and is less expensive than a hot mix asphalt driveway.  Being able to pick the stones for your chip sealed driveway, results in a beautiful curb appeal, which adds to the value and functionality of your property.  The tar & chip paving method requires very little maintenance and usually, there are about 10 years before you have to resurface it.  This makes a chip sealed driveway a very economical choice since it does not need seal coating regularly, as other paving methods do.

In Texas, there are not many downsides to a chip and seal driveway because of the typical weather conditions.  One of the main damaging factors is snow because snowplows can damage your chip sealed driveway.  This weather condition doesn’t create high alarm in Texas, making a chip sealed driveway a very practical choice.

You will find that not every paving company has expertise when it comes to Texas chip.  However, with Tar and Chip Texas, this is not an issue as we specialize in this paving method and serve the entire state of Texas.
Hot Mix Asphalt

Traditional hot mix asphalt is a commonly chosen material for paving parking lots and driveways.  When asphalt tar is installed, our asphalt contractors will first skillfully remove and dig out whatever debris is in the project area to make room for the base of your future driveway.  The base must first settle before the liquid tar is poured out and applied.  Once the hot asphalt tar is applied, it is then compacted and pressed with one of our industrial rollers, and then it must set for a length of time, in order for it to be completely curated.

When picking the type of paving materials you would like for your driveway, a hot asphalt mix driveway does have many upsides as well.  A blacktop driveway, if it is installed professionally and kept up properly, can be long lasting and can go up to 30 years before they need to be replaced.  This lifespan makes it a great investment.  A hot mix asphalt driveway is also hardwearing and flexible, meaning it is able to withstand heavy vehicles and weather that would otherwise cause cracking in the pavement.  This is also a very affordable option compared to other paving methods, and if you take care of your driveway in the proper way, your investment can last decade.

However, there are some other aspects to consider about a hot mix asphalt driveway.  Due to the black color, when it gets extremely hot outside, which is very common in Texas, the hot asphalt will soak up the heat like a sponge and heat up any vehicle parked on it.  Also, in order to get the full lifespan out of a blacktop asphalt driveway, you must maintain it properly.  If cracks are not filled in at once, bigger damage can quickly follow.  You also need to go through sealcoating the asphalt every two to five years.
